3DRobotics Solo with video-centric features announced

3DRobotics Solo with video-centric features announced

3DR has just announced the Solo Quadcopter, a new camera drone with 1GHz CPU both inside the copter as well as the remote, and several unique features aimed at aerial videographers.

solo1

The Solo comes with a 5200mAh LiPo battery pack as well as full GoPro remote control capability. In addition to the usual GPS position hold and waypoint features, the Solo not only features HD video streaming but also an intuitive way to set waypoints, with the capability to “play back” camera flights at the touch of a button. The idea obviously is for the pilot to be able to set up a camera flight and then be able to recall the performance, including gimbal orientation and panning, simply by pressing “play”.

The remote comes with a built-in color OLET screen for telemetry data and setup as well as a tablet/phone mount. The price? $999 for the Solo itself, and another $399 for the gimbal. Not exactly a steal, but 3DR emphasizes the open nature of the product and its extensibility. These are the same guys who brought you the excellent PixHawk flight controller. Sales start in May in the US, and June/July in the rest of the world.

Both come with a fancy-looking handheld radio with a bright color touchscreen in the center. The shadow sports a 300g payload capacity, while the Guardian can carry up to 400g at even longer flight times. Available options include a vibration dampened GoPro mount, a stabilizing GoPro gimbal, as well as a stabilized 1-axis gimbal for a 20 megapixel sony camera with optical zoom.

Of course both support GPS position hold, return home, altitude hold, etc. and the Guardian even comes in a stylish pelican case for quick mission deployment. No word on pricing yet, though with a turnkey system like that, expect a nice four-digit sum.

Hubsan H109S Pro X4 announced

Hubsan H109S Pro X4 announced

January 2, 2014 11:00 | By | 9 Comments

Pining for that upcoming Hubsan H109? Hubsan’s upcoming Phantom-competitor certainly looks interesting, and now they’re upping the ante with the announcement of the GoPro-ready H109S Pro X4!

h109s-x4-00Features are GPS position hold and return to land, barometer sensor for precise altitude hold and the possibility of waypoint capability via future updates.

Perhaps most interestingly this comes with a massive 5300mAh battery for flight times of up to 30 minutes, according to Hubsan. Sadly though, it comes with a modified version of the old Hubsan FPV transmitter, so the question is whether the short transmitter battery life issue has been fixed. Also according to the manufacturer this will use the Hubsan radio protocol, which means it’s a non-hopping, single channel 2.4GHz system. This time however they added a proper SMA connector for the FPV antenna, and they even supply both a linear patch as well as a circular cloverleaf antenna in the set, so you can exchange antenna depending on the situation.

h109s-x4-02

No word on price yet, though preorders for the vanilla H109 are at $150 right now. With the right price point and proper performance this could very well be a solid competitor in the field of RTF multirotors. Planned release date is end of February 2014.

Full official blurb after the break.

Back-Bone Ribcage adds classy lens compatibility to your GoPro 3

Back-Bone Ribcage adds classy lens compatibility to your GoPro 3

Canadian company Back-Bone plans to launch a lineup of accessoirs for the GoPro enabling it to accept a wide range of Micro-M12, CS and C-Mount lenses. This means you can also attach a lens adapter for a wide variety of other lenses (Nikon, Pentax, etc.)

Right now you can preorder a kit for $199 (sold out) which require some (dis-)assembly or one of 60 converted GoPro cameras for $799.

Is this required stuff for your multirotor? Probably not, but then again there’s plenty of creative stuff you can do with a different lens that’s just not possible with the built-in one.

360º lens Kickstarter with Oculus support

360º lens Kickstarter with Oculus support

December 6, 2013 9:36 | By | 1 Comment

Check out this Kickstarter for a lens that does 360º images and video for GoPro, DSLR, Video and Compact cameras. The details are a bit sketch as they promise a custom firmware for GoPro3/3+, which makes one wonder what GoPro thinks about this. Also promising Oculus Rift support, this does sound like an interesting piece of kit for your next multicopter payload.

360We should mention that this is not the first such project, the Actioncam360 kickstarter was launched a few weeks ago, but has not picked up quite as much steam. Still, both sound interesting. We like the gopro-compatible mount on top of the 360 (the first one) – but we can’t help but notice that it’s the wrong gender – if you want to attach this whole contraption to the bottom of your multicopter you need the matching opposite.

Imago H8 1080p FPV camera with dual microSD card slot

Imago H8 1080p FPV camera with dual microSD card slot

December 5, 2013 12:28 | By | 2 Comments

According to Wikipedia, the imago is the last stage an insect attains during its metamorphosis. In FPV flight, the Imago is just a camera: RCTimer is selling the Imago H8, a 1080p capable action camera designed for FPV flight. It features dual microSD slots, taking 2 x 32GB max, maximum framerate is 30 fps at 1080p or 60 fps at 720p.

There’s a 800mAh LiPo battery inside for up to 2 hours of recording time, and a little integrated LCD screen allows you to preview and review your recordings at the airfield. Total weight is just under 70 grams, which is a little lighter than the GoPro 3 black which weighs 76 grams. The Imago H8 supports analog video output via its mini USB port, just like the GoPro 3. It should be noted that the GoPro3+ dropped this feature. There’s plenty of buttons on this device and it looks like it might actually be easier to use than a GoPro, and having that screen on there is a big plus as well.

Sale price is USD $135.- over at RCTimer. Whether this is a good alternative to the ubiquitous GoPro, or the Imago H8 just metamorphed out of a 808 keycam remains to be seen.

Stick around after the break for more photos and specs.

Two cheap turnkey Multicopters with camera-gimbal

Two cheap turnkey Multicopters with camera-gimbal

Goodluckbuy has a lot of cool stuff, and a lot of crappy stuff. This is definitely in the cool category:

An ARTF package for a F550 based Hexacopter, or a F450 based Quadcopter, both including aluminium brushless gimbal for a GoPro, complete with motors, ESCs and flight controller. The real kicker is the price: Just $210 for the quadcopter, or $270 for the hexacopter. GPS is a $24 addon. As far as one can see there’s only two downsides here: The frame comes with the MultiWii-based flight controller… because it’s integrated. So if you break the frame’s PCB you will have to get a new flight controller. The second downside is that it’s unclear whether the more capable MegaPirate or other firmwares will run on this flight controller. Our guess is, it won’t.

But other than that… frankly this is an amazing deal even if you just ditch the integrated flight controller, buy some F550/F450 baseplates without the integrated flight controller and stick a Crius AIO onto it. This is as cheap as it gets. Compare this with the less-capable DJI Phantom where the base model costs more than twice as much and doesn’t even include a gimbal, much less a high quality one as this.  In fact, depending on where you buy, the DJI gimbal costs more than this entire set.

GoPro recently announced the GoPro 3+ line, including the GoPro 3+ Black and Silver edition. There’s a nice list of improvements which are by itself not earth-shattering, but combined they do elevate the 3+ well above the competition in some respects:

  • New 2.8 lens for better image quality
  • 30% more battery life
  • 20% smaller case with tighter fit
  • faster WiFi chip
  • improved audio processing
  • new auto Low Light mode
  • new 1080p SuperView mode records in full resultion 4:3 and then sizes down to 16:9 for better quality at the cost of slight image squashing
  • Silver Edition now supports 1080p@60fps and 720p@120fps

Prices are now $399 for the Black edition, $299 for the Silver edition, and the previous non-plus GoPro 3 can now be bought for a discounted $329, respectively $249 for the old Silver edition.
