3DRobotics Solo with video-centric features announced

3DR has just announced the Solo Quadcopter, a new camera drone with 1GHz CPU both inside the copter as well as the remote, and several unique features aimed at aerial videographers.

The Solo comes with a 5200mAh LiPo battery pack as well as full GoPro remote control capability. In addition to the usual GPS position hold and waypoint features, the Solo not only features HD video streaming but also an intuitive way to set waypoints, with the capability to “play back” camera flights at the touch of a button. The idea obviously is for the pilot to be able to set up a camera flight and then be able to recall the performance, including gimbal orientation and panning, simply by pressing “play”.

The remote comes with a built-in color OLET screen for telemetry data and setup as well as a tablet/phone mount. The price? $999 for the Solo itself, and another $399 for the gimbal. Not exactly a steal, but 3DR emphasizes the open nature of the product and its extensibility. These are the same guys who brought you the excellent PixHawk flight controller. Sales start in May in the US, and June/July in the rest of the world.

French company Parrot recently announced their latest product, the Bepop Drone. It’s a lightweight quadcopter with a digitally stabilized camera, eschewing mechanical gimbals in order to save weight.

The 14 megapixel camera isn’t the only attraction though, for it boasts a dual-core embedded linux flight controller with 8GB of RAM, Wifi range of up to 300 meters or, with a range extender package, going as far as 2km.  Their “SkyController” is basically a tablet dock with sticks, not exactly a brand new idea but definitely executed in an interesting fashion.

Price is said to be above the Parrot.AR, but below the Phantom 2. Watch the official product video after the break, and check out the official website.

Formation Proximity 2 shows amazing bird of prey attack

There’s some really great footage in the latest video by Team Blacksheep. While the flying itself is a lot less reckless than we’re used to from them, they do show off very cool formation flying in this second part of their Formation Proximity videos. And in the middle of the flight, a huge bird of prey attacks and successfully downs one of their Zephyr FPV planes.

Really breathtaking footage. Take a gander after the break.

Lusting for a mini-quadcopter with an integrated camera, but don’t want to spend $100? The Micro Drone 2.0 is now being sold for a mere USD $64.- over at CultOfMac.com. It looks a lot like a Walkera Ladybird with an on-board camera and microSD video recorder. The camera is a standard-definition model, so don’t expect amazing HD footage.

Still, for 64 bucks, that’s not too bad. Sale ends in 6 days though, so you have to be quick. Or, you know, wait for the next sale.

10g 5.8GHz 220mW FPV Transmitter

10g 5.8GHz 220mW FPV Transmitter

GLB has a set of neat little FPV video transmitters on sale. It’s a 220mW 5.8GHz TX with integrated cloverleaf antenna, weighing only 10 grams. You can choose between a version with servo connector or one that fits right into your GoPro. Both cost around USD $58.- which is not a bad deal. Keep in mind that you will need a compatible left-hand circular polarized antenna on the receiver side as well.

Supported frequencies are 5.705, 5.685, 5.665, 5.645, 5.885, 5.905, 5.925 and 5.945 GHz, which means this won’t work with your ImmersionRC/FatShark receiver. But then again, there are better (higher selectivity, diversity etc.) receiver modules available that do work with these frequencies.
